best-of-nyfw-2016-tadashi-shojiTadashi Shoji may not be a household name, but his world renowned figure-flattering techniques from draping, ruching and shutter pleats have appealed both to the masses and celebrities. After an unsuccessful attempt at a career as an artist in Japan, Tadashi moved to the West Coast were he pursued his career in fashion. He positioned his label as a populist brand and to this day he tries to separate himself from elite brands. Unlike, household names that only design a limited amount of dresses, Tadashi wanted to design for real women who could afford his dresses and truly give value to his merchandise. While most designers don’t design garments larger than a Size 10 to 12, Tadashi will create pieces that go up to Size 24.

Tadashi Shoji has become the go-to not only for the masses, but for celebrities as well looking to separated themselves from the latest body clenching creations from Dior and Prada. Much like Chanel, Tadashi is a fan of stretchy, non-constrictive fabrics and patterns that allow women ease of movement and comfort.

This season, Tadashi found inspiration for his Spring 2017 collection in artist Wu Junyong’s video The Flying Ark. The video was of a crane lifting a tree full of animals from a scorched earth. His thoughts were light, life and nature.
