Back in the day, one used to find a barber shop in nearly every neighborhood. Then the trend shifted to hair salons, followed by nail salons, and finally by blow-dry bars. The latest trend to hit 63rd and Lexington, is a 950-square-foot makeup salon started by our one and only – MAC Cosmetics. The opening night for the six-chair makeup studio with two back room V.I.P. seats is July 15th. The salon will be open 7 days a week starting at 7 a.m. on Monday through Friday. Services will range anywhere from winged liner ($15, 15 minutes) to an entire face, everything from contoured face, skin finishing and nude lips ($60, 60 minutes).
MAC’s marketing strategy aims to provide a more intimate, zen-like setting for people to get their makeup done. Rather than getting one’s makeup done in the hustle and bustle of a MAC store, one can now schedule an appointment at the MAC makeup salon. This strategy aims to cater to the “selfie generation” that feels the need to look beautiful and perfect at any hour of the day. In fact, MAC’s marketing team claims that social media will act as their advertisements and drive their sales as people post their looks to Instagram and Twitter. The salon is mainly target to the demanding on-the-go New Yorker, but will surely attract some tourists as well. If the venture goes well, there will be plans for more MAC makeup salons to be set up around New York and the US. Who knows, if this goes well MAC could go as far as creating an at-home on-call service venture..
